What's Happenin On Campus 9/09

Praise the Lord! Because of God’s provision, I am steadily at 59% of my monthly support goal! Thank you for staying with me this entire time as I try to meet my support goal soon.

This past week Rutgers University missional leader, Tommy Waters (pictured left with his fiance & my roommate, Karen), reported that the Fall semester is in full swing at Rutgers University. Staffs at R.U. have introduced the Cru ministry to the five RU campuses at an "activities fair" and at the first football game through a tailgate party. Typically students drink and party in the parking lot, but Cru students had a BBQ and Christian fellowship. Rutgers Cru has already had their first large group meeting with approximately 60 students attending, including a new group of freshmen! They have also had a scavenger hunt, put door hangers with the Gospel on every freshman’s dorm room door and is preparing for their first week of small group Bible Studies. Praise God for an encouraging start!

Since I moved to NJ to intern with Campus Crusade for Christ, the Scott Family (pictured here) has been encouraging and helpful through it all. After raising support, one of the campuses I will be returning to is probably New Jersey City University where Mark Scott (also a Jersey Metro Director) is currently working. Jocelyn Scott reports on the happenings of the new Fall semester and NJCU where her husband, Mark, is the staff coach to the Cru Ministry:
One of the primary things we’re doing over the next few weeks is distributing Freshman Survival Kits (FSKs), which are bags full of Gospel-oriented materials in the form of books, cds, dvds, toys, and practical stuff (e.g. laundry bags). Students, especially freshmen, tend to flock to their campuses’ activity fairs, so we make it our business to be there, ready to hand out these kits for free. We generally have the table with the best stuff, and it usually goes like hotcakes. In return, students fill out surveys that ask about their spiritual background and interest level.
Take New Jersey City University, for example. NJCU had an activity fair last Thursday morning. Mark was there with Freshman Survival Kits, and he and Joey (our student leader there) handed them out and collected the surveys they got in return. Now Joey and the rest of the NJCU group will spend the rest of the semester following up the students who expressed an interest in knowing more about Jesus. (I’m always surprised at how many positive responses they get!) It’s a good, solid, high-momentum way to start the school year.
